Orthodontics combine big-picture goals,
tiny details and lifelong learning.
- An orthodontist's education includes college, dental school and a multi-year
residency plus lifelong learning to keep up with advances.
- In addition, SureSmile orthodontists master the technology associated with the
SureSmile treatment system.
Orthodontists Work to Provide an Attractive Smile
Orthodontic care is not just about using brackets and wires to straighten teeth.
It's about considering each unique patient, evaluating the appearance and function
of the patient's teeth and bite and formulating a treatment plan. The orthodontist
works toward a long-term goal of providing the patient with a more attractive smile
and better functioning teeth for a lifetime.
To fill this role in their patients' lives, orthodontists must combine a number of
abilities. They must have the skill and patience to do finely detailed work, making
subtle adjustments and measuring progress in tiny increments. They must have a comprehensive
understanding of both anatomy and physics and how the two interact. They must be capable and
willing to master advances in technology.
Fostering those abilities takes high-level education, extensive training and a commitment to
lifelong learning.
Preparation for a career in orthodontics begins with college followed by a certified
postgraduate dentistry program with an accredited institution. All orthodontists are
dentists, but only six percent of dentists go on to become orthodontists, an achievement
that requires up to three years of residency in the study of orthodontics. Board-certified
orthodontists not only complete an orthodontics residency but go on to satisfy the strict
requirements of the American Board of Orthodontics. Certification by the Board earns them
the title of Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Continuing education is part of the orthodontic profession. Early in the 20th century,
professional societies were established to promote advanced orthodontic training. The societies,
including the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and the Charles H. Tweed International
Foundation, continue today, offering study groups and ongoing learning opportunities.
SureSmile orthodontists augment their already extensive training by adding mastery of the
SureSmile system. Before offering SureSmile treatment to their patients, orthodontists and
their office staffs take a comprehensive course in operating SureSmile equipment and using
SureSmile technology. Through continual classroom learning and technological training, SureSmile
orthodontists and their staffs are able to deliver precise and effective treatment results to
their patients.
